Driving to work this AM, I heard a commercial for New Balance shoes. The next commercial was for a bank and they used the word “balance” in the commercial. The next commercial should have been for a gymnastics school or, perhaps, a playground equipment company. A quick search on wikipedia.com yields several results, most of which deal with equilibrium of some sort. Power. Energy. Weight. Mass. In accounting, it’s not about the debit equaling the credits, but, that the numbers at the bottom are accurate. There’s a balance of the correctness of “the books”.

A teeter-totter is a simple balance. Even out the weight on each side, and have fun! However, let’s pretend the “teeter-totter” is an 8 sided disc, with differing weight on each of the points. And, rather than even-ing out the weight, we’re trying to find the fulcrum, the point in the middle where we can even out this mess. And, the whole time, those weights on each of those points are changing. Not drastically, but certainly changing.

I had this feeling this morning, also while driving in to work. God is preparing me for something in the future. Something big! That certainly makes one feel good in a time of in-balance. However, in reading Upmost this morning, we find a different picture:

We have the idea that God is going to do some exceptional thing— that He is preparing and equipping us for some extraordinary work in the future. But as we grow in His grace we find that God is glorifying Himself here and now, at this very moment. If we have God’s assurance behind us, the most amazing strength becomes ours, and we learn to sing, glorifying Him even in the ordinary days and ways of life.

In trying to deal with my own state of in-balance, I find that I’m forgetting about the here and now. God can be glorified right now. Even in me and perhaps even through me. My “purpose” isn’t about what’s to come, it’s about what’s already here.
