I’ve noticed and interesting thing lately… people have a hard time crossing over from one “discipline” to another… It’s story time!

I was in a meeting at work a few weeks ago. We were talking about an email that came TO us (compared to the millions of email we send out a week, getting one back seems like a big deal!). A lady thought we were baiting and switching in the email. Well, the email subject didn’t correspond to the actual email body. But, I digress…

The gal had her phone number and place of employment in the email. However, we didn’t know what city she was in. One of the IT gals goes to the computer terminal and logs in to the mainframe (?!) to search her info.

I pick up my “smartphone” and within second find that the gal is from a city in Florida. I make a remark and one person hears me, smiles and we wait.

And we wait.

And we all have “smartphones” on the table or in our pockets. After all, we ARE smart in this room…!

5 minutes later the IT gal announces that the email came from a city in Florida…

Why the disconnect? Shortly after being hired at this place we had a discussion on formatting emails to be read by these so-called “smartphones”. I’ve had an iPhone for 3+ years! And we’re just having those discussions?

I had a discussion with a colleague about our shopping cart, acting like I had never seen it before. Uhh. Duh. I see it probably a hundred times a week.

I also see this all the time in churches. We sit and talk profoundly about things and we as leaders tend to not bring our everyday/work lives into the conversation. I realize we can’t always run everything like a business. But, can we not bring our experiences, gifts, talents and capacity to the table? As if our brains stop functioning in a certain capacity once we leave the office.

Why do we, make that, why do I have a hard time making that transition? Where’s the disconnect?

Someone please take off these glasses.
