So, got the email today from Derek Webb. He’s sent out emails lately that use misspelled words and characters in order to get past filters that look for certain things. He and his record label were in disagreement about his latest project. Apparently because in one song, he uses the “s” word. They wanted him to censor that for the Christian community. And of course, Derek being Derek isn’t about to let “the suits’ tell him what he can and can’t do.

I’m oversimplifying it, of course. It’s typically more complex than that. But, then, maybe not.

Regardless, he’s sent out these emails drawing attention to this fact which, of course, stirs up curiosity and lots of proverbial word of mouth grassroots marketing. Like what I’m doing here.

The project released today digitally and in Sept. in physical format. Am I going ot buy it? You bet! And I’ll get one of the premium packages in order to hear all about the controversy. And yes, he believes in what he’s doing and in his causes. And of course, he believes in the ”cause of Derek“ and all this talk, his talk of this being his ”most important project that has to be heard“ will/has helped him generate tons of interest and ultimately, sales.

So, do I fault him? Not really. I guess I’m jealous. Perhaps OTB should start using the ”s“ word in order to generate sales. If only we could figure out that angle…
