So, I decided to make this the “Birthday Month” Dean has always envisioned. We headed to Atchison, KS to the annual Nell Hill’s Warehouse Sale on Sat. June 2. We went up the night before, checked into the local B&B, the former KS Governor Glick Mansion. Large. Stately. Interesting. Cool. Ate at the local Italian place. Ok, food. Italian is all about the sauce. It was very good and authentic, but not like our forever favorite, Josie’s in Scammon. Then to the local Theater Atchison to see “Oscar and Felix”, an updated version of “The Odd Couple”. Ok. Local theater at it’s best! Then back to the B&B.
The big event was Sat. AM. The BIG SALE! Nell Hill’s is a very renowned home decorating/furnishings place. They have this sale every year and women line up starting at like 5am for the doors to open at 9am. We got there at about 7:45 and the line was already quite long. I was one of about 10 token men present. And hundreds of women! What a place to pick up chicks! All was altrustic in line. Lots and lots and lots of chit chat. The women close to us had driven up from Little Rock, AR for the sale. Delta Burke and “Designing Women” was their favorite actress/show. That about says it all.
They opened the doors and all semblance of calm demeanor left. The crowd moved forward and IN to the large warehouse. It was pandemonium. You don’t stop and linger. You can’t. No time to decide if it’s the “right color” or not. You pick and get pushed thru. By the time we got in, a mere minutes after the doors had opened, the place was already showing signs of emptiness. Lots of pockets where stuff had once resided. You choose and aisle and get pushed thru. No turning back. No politeness. Estrogen out of control.
We came thru fairly unscathed. Some Christmas decorations and some cool Christmas plates. Dean went back to the furniture tent and picked up some bar stools for our soon-to-be new island. We spent some cash. We always do. I rather enjoyed it. Not as a participant, but as an observer. Quite the show!
So, we went to the actual store downtown Atchison. Not the pandemonium, but lots of Estrogen none-the-less! And other stores. And other stuff. Finally back home thru the hills of Missouri. Quite the 24 hours!
