The whole world around us is constantly in a state of progress. The human nature is always striving to avoid the unpleasant and grasp the pleasurable. We are told to pursue our dreams. I get these emails from a guy who calls himself the Goals Guy and it’s all about trying to further oneself and increase one’s position. And we carry that over to the Christian life. We talk about winning the lost. Servant oriented outreach. We set goals. Develop mission statements. Carry on business in one city and move on to the next. We ask God what He wants us to do. Our plea to God is that He would show us His will in our life. And yet, we struggle.
And I think we have it all wrong.
The goal of the missionary is to do God’s will, not to be useful or to win the lost. A missionary is useful and he does win the lost, but that is not his goal. His goal is to do the will of his Lord.
– Chambers
Ok, so the quote still deals with the will of God and perhaps that’s the struggle. If we only knew the will of God, then all would be fine. But I certainly get the sense in general and perhaps in observance of those around me that we end up pursuing the things that we feel are right and not necessarily the will of the Lord.
It’s not even fair that we live with all these human emotions and exterior forces; that God put us in this environment and yet we find the answer to be simple to know but yet hard to implement.
