So, I get a call out of the blue, well, sorta. “Wanna come in for an interview?”

“Sure!” I replied.

Unfortunately, I forgot the name of the company. Luckily, I remembered the time and location of the interview. I knew it was insurance of some sort. Ugh. I generally knew from the start I wouldn’t accept the offer, but, figured the process would give me valuable experience.

I was one of 15 in the room. Wow. Some “interview”! We filled out some forms and filled out a short survey. I’m sitting in a financial planning place (they do that after they sell the insurance) and “interviewing” for a job and answering every question about financial planning as if I’d rather jump out of a plane (ok, i really WOULD like to jump out of a plane!).

One question asked if I’d like a second interview. I “cheated” and looked at what others were saying and decided to mark it “yes”. More experience, if nothing else. They said they’d call back by noon the next day. It was 11:45 AM and I figured they were smart and passed on me.

Ring.

Ugh.

I go back in for a second interview, this time with 4 in the room. How lucky! Another 2 hours of explaining about the company and then a “real” one-on-one chat. “Why did you choose me?” I asked. “Well, we mark on this sheet our initial impression from 1 to 7 and you scored a 5. Most people are 3’s and 4’s.”

I respond, “so, this is totally subjective?”
“Well, not completely, we look at that survey and you care for people. And, we look at your resume as well”

I wanted to respond, “what about any of that really made you want to pick me or is it that I really look that good in a suit?”

HA!

I was supposed to call them by Monday. I called, but, they didn’t pick up the phone. Hmm. A sign perhaps?

So, fear not, I’m not coming after you to buy some insurance. They cater to the senior market anyway.

On to the next thing. Fortunately, there are some options…
