I went and saw the Tabor production of “Children of Eden” last night. Very interesting. Actually a little progressive for a Tabor production. One of the characters even said “damn”… (Judy, you animal you!).
One of the most memorable parts of the production was an exchange between Father (God) and Adam. Eve had eaten of the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge and Father had banished her from the garden. Adam had yet to eat of the fruit and he was presented a choice. He could stay in the garden and Father would make another mate for Adam. Or, he could eat of the fruit and join Eve in banishment.
As Adam was pondering the decision, stay with the woman he loved in banishment or live forever in the garden, Father remarked, “there is pain in choice.” Up to that point, Father had provided everything for His children. They were actually free from having to choose. They just lived in the presence of Father.
Though they most likely had choice (“let’s see, eat this carrot or that green bean”), they were totally and completely provided for. That choice, that one choice, ushered in a whole new world of choice for His children. And having choice brings pain.
Fortunately, there is hope…
