the $4 plus $2083 conduit

So…

And if the post starts like that, well…

We are avid Habitat ReStore shoppers. In Wichita, the ReStore was between home and work, so I stopped by there at least once per week. In Olathe, the closest ReStore isn’t quite as convenient. However, we still try to stop there a couple of times per month and then hit another local ReStore as often as we can.

I was needing some conduit to run some wires from the attic to the basement. Conduit runs certainly help in running wires, something that happens for me more often than the average homeowner. So I looked at one of my ReStore runs and true to form, they had some conduit. $4 for 3 sticks.

One of the joys of our new 1907 home in Olathe is the lack of a garage. We’ve tending to find homes that have a “deal breaker” that we overlook. Home without a basement. Home with only one bathroom. Home without central HVAC. You get the idea. So, a home without a garage? I guess I figured it was just one of those things we add to the list.

I would typically either use the conduit right away or put it in the garage. Being someone not known for his organizational skills, the garage would have been a mess, but, the conduit would at least be out of the way.

Alas, I put the conduit on the back deck.

I’ve put conduit back there before and even had issues with it. And I knew this when I put it there. But.. well, I like to laugh in the face of danger.

So, Suoerbowl 50, Sunday Feb. 7, I’m out grilling some wings and drummies. I turn to walk back inside and before I can even get my bearings on where i’m headed, I’m headed down. Fast. And hard. I hear and feel some strong things in my ankle and it looks a little weird as well. And pain? Not really a lot of pain, but, I can clearly tell I won’t be walking out of there.

I pull the “army man crawl” and then give up and call Aaron on the phone to come help me. He quickly appears at the window, lolling around for me and he clearly doesn’t see me lying on the deck. He finds me down and…

Broken ankle. 3 places. Surgery. 6-8 weeks off my ankle. And a bill for $2083.
