I worked in sales and customer service for a manufacturing company for several years. At some point, it became quite clear to me that the most important people in the whole plant were the shipping guys. Shipping guys? Yes. Because they were the last hands to touch the product before heading off to the customer. They are the final QC people. If something is wrong, they still have the opportunity to get it fixed. Sometimes, we work so hard to make things right only to have “the least” bring it down.

Sometimes leadership/upper management is sabotaged by the least.

I’m sure millions, if not billions of dollars have been spent on HIPAA laws. I’m no lawyer and I haven’t done research on all the details of the HIPAA laws, but, every time I sign documents regarding HIPAA, I chuckle. Because of this:

Requires the protection and confidential handling of protected health information

So, I’m at the doctor’s office and they call the name of a patient who is pregnant. Or I see a list of people who sign in at the receptionists desk. Should this not be protected health information?

I recently asked for copies of the details of my ankle surgery. They prepare them for me and I pick them up at the surgery facility. I get home, and look through some of the documents. I notice some interesting details regarding my information. Then I glance to the top of the document. Umm. They got the last name correct. But, my first name is definitely NOT Michelle. They copied the wrong document. I have the patient’s name, DOB, diagnosis… Someone could get fired for this. I could probably go to jail for possession of these documents. A $10/hr. employee brings down the whole system.

Finally, this same thing happens in the local church. At least at my local church. The church leadership works hard to, well, lead the church. Make decisions regarding what’s best for the body. Take a lead in Spiritual physical and overall matters. And yet, they cower when Person X is involved. Person X has no overall leadership role, though, they have attended for many years. The “power” has been established through time and, dare I say it, bullying. So, the church leaders may consider changes that would be best for the body, but, if these changes would run contrary to what Person X would prefer, they don’t even bring it up!?!

Why do we allow “the least” to have so much power?
