My friend Nathan has lived through 2 house fires. He says it’s not a good thing. I am sure it isn’t.
However…
We have consistently acquired more things. I have the love of all things audio (professional equipment and home A/V) as well as home remodeling. Both of these hobbies cause one to acquire stuff.
My wife has the love of all things decorating. She acquires stuff.
I have too many receivers, some of which may not even function properly. We have too many armoires. We have too many chairs, too many tables, too many CDs, too many lights, too many tools, too many…
And I am frustrated. I wanna get rid of these things. But, purging is difficult. You acquire items with plans to use them, fix them up, maybe even sell them or use them for other projects. And then you move them from one house to another to another and you get tired of all this stuff. So tired…
…you wish for a fire. It seems that a fire would solve it. The fire would choose what you get to keep and what gets tossed out. The fire might even solve the need to move the item. Wood would burn up. Paper incinerated. Plastic melted. All just ashes.
So, I’ve been having these conversations lately with my dad about people having all this stuff with no plans to purge or otherwise solve what to do with stuff. He gets frustrated in trying to help people who refuse to deal with how to deal with stuff (physical or otherwise) BEFORE they pass away. I then look at him and generally ask the question, “well, are you dealing with YOUR stuff?” He tends to refuse to admit he’s getting older as he watches people YOUNGER than him pass away.
So, then I walk into my basement and wonder if I’m not the pot calling the kettle calling the pot black.
